I think Jasem said it is fixed in nightly. So you either move to the nightly (beta test) build, or wait for the next stable release.
Look at the "Get INDI" menu for instructions on how to change to the nightly build (e.g. under Ubuntu), or build INDI from source after pulling the latest from Github.
If you now have Stellarmate then you can open a support ticket with them.

INDI "Support" for the AM5 was added in 1.9.4.
However, this is the commit: github.com/indilib/indi/commit/3bddbf7a3...bfe79b9f7af97519657a
Note that this is before any developers had an AM5 to test, so it was just guessed that it would be an LX200 compatible mount.
It appears that, in fact, it is "mostly" compatible, but has some differences.
These won't be sorted until a developer has time and has access to an AM5 mount for testing.

What you've done works...
The hips.tar.gz file is set up that you would do the following:
cd /
sudo tar zxvf hips.tar.gz
This would end up with the NorderX directories in the /usr/share/kstars/HIPS folder, which is a more standard location for the kstars systemwide (in that they're available read-only for all users on a system, rather than having them in your home folder.
Then you would just point kstars to look at the /usr/share/kstars/HIPS in the dialog that you screenshotted.
You don't have to change what you've done, I'm just explaining why they have the /usr/share/kstars path prefix in the tar file.

I discovered a way to download this data.
I'm not going to reveal how I downloaded the data.
The reason for this is that the people who own the data, while saying that the data can be obtained and used for non-commercial purposes, have put restrictions on its use (see the statement on my blog post).
However, they didn't actually put restrictions on the distribution of the data, though it remains within their copyright, so I feel it fine to seed these as torrents.
I'm not distributing these in any other format, it is up to the open-source community to perpetuate this and torrent, while often associated with clandestine software piracy, is the way to do this.
If you find no seeds available, then I can re-enable mine.
