Coincidently, I had this "starting Ekos" situation just yesterday.

This happened when (before the scheduler started) I had to Stop/re-Start services.
I did this in Setup tab of Ekos (Disconnect > Stop > Start).
The system worked fine after this but the scheduler failed to start with "starting Ekos" showing indefinitely.

After I rebooted the system, all was fine.

I rearranged manually... but some panels would eventually go behind a larger panel.
So, I followed Hy's advise and prefixed files.
With focal lengths. Like: 050, 135, 280, 400...
This worked perfectly!

You may consider, instead of Pi, to go with a mini PC path.
I ditched my both Pi4 in favor of Mele Quieter 3Q.
The power consumption is about the same if not better.
But Mele is so much more potent! Not expensive either.

You would have to buy Stellarmate X OS for it though.
(Replaces Mele's Windows).
Well worth it.

I run Stellarmate X OS on Mele Quiter3Q (less than $200 + $50 for Stellarmate OS).
Mele runs well and I have two of them. Dual HDMI supported (I never used that though).
Mele comes with Windows preinstalled but you don't need Windows, just install Stellarmate over it.
I also tried and installed Ubuntu + KStars + Ekos on Mele.
It worked and was free but I prefer Stellarmate.

I am using UltraVNC as a VNC viewer on Windows PC's.
Has been using it for years.

Since several months ago I am getting severe artefacts in KStars sky map when connected via VNC.
Using latest stable Stellarmate X OS on Mele.

it's not a very big deal but looks unpleasant.
Is this my VNC viewer problem or something else? Thanks!

Hy,
I checked the memory usage (in Windows' Task Manager).
Before I started KStars my memory usage was 10.5GB.
After I started KStars - memory usage went up to 11.2GB. Not much.
Enabling/disabling overlays didn't make any difference.

I rearranged some of my overlays.
This wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

When I started to use the overlays, the plate-solving was a bit unreliable and I had to provide an approximate position.
Now plate-solving works much more reliably in the blind mode (i.e. without providing the approximate position).
Great!

Question:
I have now around 80 overlays sized 500KB on average.
I don't notice any KStars slowdown.
Can I add 80 more? 800 more?
