As as quick update the same happens with Indi version 1.9.0, namely not letting me switch to 16 bit, and variable download speed (though less this time as it is on a laptop running Mint (varies from 0.46s to 1.62s though).

Have you looked at the actual files downloaded? Are they truly only 8-bit? Maybe the INDI control panel is lying to you.

Hi, as an updated, I'm now using KStars 3.5.4 and Indi V 1.9.1 and it is now performing as expected - namely the Image Info tab shows 16 bit etc, and there doesn't seem to be the same variability of image download speed.
